While kids can be excited to go back to school with new clothes, new teachers and new friends, they are often rather less thrilled at the thought of all that homework and reading. While no one enjoys homework, children can and should be encouraged to enjoy reading. If children are encouraged in the proper manner, their reading lists should fly by and end up feeling not at all like homework. Early elementary school students ought to have reading lists which are books that they have read instead of specific required material.

Setting a good example can start a child off on the correct path, as children enjoy emulating their parents. If a child sees a parent reading for pleasure, they may well decide to read for fun too, and you should make certain that they have as many options open to them as possible.
